Johnny Got His Gun is one of A movie comes along that‘s almost perfect .From Dalton Trumbo’s 1939 novel and screenplay, and directed by Dalton Trumbo, this anti-war movie is a work of beauty.

“Johnny Got His Gun” presents the story of 18-year-old Joe Bonham (Timothy Bottoms), who brushes off the urgings of his girl-friend Kareen (Kathy Fields) to “just run away” rather than ship out (WW1). Once in the French trenches, he quickly loses his own company and throws in with some British troops. One fearsomely rainy night, he’s sent out to bury a German soldier who had died caught in the barbed wire above their trench and whose rotting body had begun to stink. A direct shell hit on the way back from this errand injures Bonham horribly and irreparably. A military doctor, Col. Tillery (Eduard Franz) declares Bonham “completely de-cerebrated” by his injuries but worth keeping alive, secretly, for research purposes. But Bonham’s in there, walled up in the remnants of his body. Tillery later reappears - white-haired now and a general - the only mark of how much time has passed before Bonham’s breakthrough Morse Code communication with the “fourth nurse” (Diane Varsi), who first inscribes a message on his chest with her finger as he frantically nods his head.

There are plenty of Trumbo films out there to sample - critical and box office successes alike - including a couple Oscar-winners (ironically both of those scripts credited to “fronts” during the 13 years Trumbo spent black-listed and couldn’t work openly in Hollywood films). But “Johnny Got His Gun” was part of Trumbo for a long time. Based on a news clip he’d seen about a British soldier with devastating injuries from the trenches of World War I, Trumbo’s 1939 novel kept the time frame but shifted young recruit Joe Bonham’s story to the US military. And after he’d published the novel, Trumbo saw combat intimately in the South Pacific as a war correspondent. Trumbo’s son Christopher says that making the film was “the best response he could manage to the carnage of the war in Vietnam.”

Trumbo was a young man when he wrote “Johnny Got His Gun,” just 33. It’s nice to have this film back at a time we still need it, along with the knowledge that he didn’t come to think better of his youthful excess.

The movie is based on the memories and delusions in Joes mind. This is what makes the movie beautiful. There are three points of view; reality, memories, and delusions, and each has a different look. Reality is shot in stark black and white, reality filmed in color, and his dreams are also in color but obviously staged and there’s more whimsy and symbolism.

The reality parts are centered on Joes “life” in the hospital, and you can hear his thoughts as he narrates about his existence, and the memories and delusions. He is treated much like a coma patient, tubes in, tubes out, and an occasional sponge bath. No one realizes at first that he is conscious much less able to communicate with them. At one point he is put in a storage closet because he won’t know the difference. Here’s one instance where the memories play an integral part in the story. Joe is thinking that he just needs a way to communicate that he is aware and in need of attention, so memories start in which he remembers a time in his youth where he learns Morse code and viola, communication.

His delusions take many forms including a couple of conversations with Jesus Christ (Donald Sutherland), and the meeting with a young girl he feels he knows for some reason, but you’ll know who she is because of the scene with his girlfriend. Some delusions are products of his impending insanity, like the circus sideshow he imagines he will become, and others are fanciful, musical remembering such as his last day of work.

Patrick Tracy Burris, 41, was killed during an attempted burglary of 30 miles (48 kilometers) of Gaffney, South Carolina.

WASHINGTON, July 2 (Xinhua) -- The number of unemployed people in the United States surged in June to 467,000, driving the jobless rate to 9.5 percent, the highest in more than 26 years, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

The June reading for job losses was worse than the 363,000 layoffs expected by economists.

Since the recession began in December 2007, the U.S economy has lost a net total of 6.5 million jobs.

"There are going to be massive, massive numbers of people who are out of work for long periods of time," Andrew Stettner, deputy director for the National Employment Law Project, said, "It's one of the most important aspects of where the economy is right now."

According to the Labor Department, the manufacturing sector shed 136,000 jobs last month while construction industries axed 79,000. Retail trade employment fell by 21,000 in the month.

Professional and business services slashed 118,000 jobs, while the federal government shed 52,000 jobs in the month.

The average work week in June fell to 33 hours, the lowest on records dating to 1964.

The Federal Reserve, the U.S. central bank, has said that the nation's unemployment rate will remain elevated into 2011. Many economists believe the labor market may not get back to normal -- meaning a 5 percent unemployment rate -- until 2013.

Nobody seems to get the point. Flurge (or however it is spelled), in not a word itself, it is an acronym. Just like Milf means "mother I'd to f_ _ k, Flurge also "stands" for something. The trouble is, no one knows, and it is not something to look up in a dictionary. I have been googling too, and so far no luck. Some people are having fun trying to make up meanings, but no one seems to know yet. So far, my guess is that they just made up a word that sounded funny, but someone will come up with something that works.

Flurge is a verb. It means a cross between flush and purge.

According to Urban Dictionary,

Indonesia earthquake tsunami warning

A massive 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Indonesia early Monday, causing a temporary tsunami warning as thousands of people fled their homes.

The quake was recorded at an underwater location about 135 kilometres northwest of the island of Sulawesi, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake and subsequent tsunami warning, which has since been lifted, caused panic in nearby coastal towns.

Indonesia's local geological survey measured the earthquake at a monstrous 7.7. However, there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Indonesia's location along the so-called "Ring of Fire," which is an area of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin, makes it particularly vulnerable to earthquakes.

It was a 9.1-magnitude earthquake, the fourth-largest in more than 100 years, which hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra in December 2004.

The earthquake and subsequent tsunami, which affected 14 countries, killed more than 200,000 people and displaced nearly 1.7 million others.

How to make Cuban coffee

Cuban coffee is a type of espresso which originated in Cuba after espresso machines were first imported there from Italy. Specifically, it refers to an espresso shot which is sweetened with sugar while it is being brewed, but the name covers other drinks which use Cuban espresso as their base. Drinking café cubano remains a prominent social and cultural activity within Cuba as well as the expatriate community.

There are two methods to making coffee the Cuban way: the traditional method using a metal stovetop espresso pot, or with an electric espresso machine. While the stovetop method takes longer, its certainly the authentic method, you can find a stovetop espresso maker at most online Cuban store websites.

1. Using an espresso machine, add the desired amount of finely ground coffee, common Cuban style brands include Bustelo, Pilon and La LLave (I'm partial to Bustelo supreme, I buy the Cuban brands online from the Cuban Food Market). You can also purchase fresh whole coffee beans from supermarkets like Albertson's or Whole Foods, any of the very dark roast Colombian brands will work best for Cuban coffee. I myself grind whole beans there at the store so that it is fine, fresh and ready to be made (espresso grind setting). Do NOT store your ground coffee in a freezer, but do keep it in a cool place away from sunlight. If you insist on drinking real Cuban coffee, only one site online sells it (pictured at the bottom of this page with a link).

2. For every demitasse cup of coffee you plan on making, use a teaspoon of sugar. The key to Cuban coffee is that it be very sweet. The trick here is to put the sugar into the glass carafe before you even brew the coffee.

3. Brew the coffee just as you would an espresso. The coffee will pour over the sugar in the carafe as it begins to brew. After it is finished filling the carafe, stir it briskly as there will still be a little undissolved sugar. Pour the coffee into several demitasse cups and enjoy.

If you cannot do without a four legged friend, choosing a hypoallergenic dog is without doubt the best alternative. For those who are scratching their heads wondering what one of those is, a hypoallergenic dog is not a special breed of dog. They are dogs that generate less (hypo) allergens (allergenic) in the air, which has a lot to do with both the physical size and the length of fur of the dog.

List of Hypoallergenic Dogs

Terriers – These dogs have short coats and are considered to be single-coated breeds, meaning that they do not have an undercoat. Undercoats are found on animals that have thick fur. The undercoat contains loose fur and dander, which can cause allergy attacks in both humans and other animals.

Originally used for hunting because they are small, fast, and enjoy finding their prey, terriers are now considered pets. While the poodle is a good pet for those with allergies, it will have health problems as it ages. Arthritis, loss of eye sight, and other issues may occur. These are common with smaller pure bred dogs.

Bichon Frise – Even though this breed of hypoallergenic dog has an undercoat, it is very springy and will not hold much dander and hair. These dogs are small and are usually very happy. They will need to be groomed in order to maintain their signature ‘marshmallow’ look.

These dogs will also have health problems as they age.

If you are considering buying a hypoallergenic dog, you should find a breed that you will enjoy spending time with. Smaller breeds are not for everyone. If you are looking for a dog that you can take on trips, take for long walks, or you just want a larger dog, you may need to take allergy medication or allergy shots.
While these dogs are called hypoallergenic, this does not mean that you won’t have allergy issues. If you have very bad allergies, then all animals will cause you to have an allergy attack every once in a while. Depending on the how bad your allergies are will determine the type of dog you should buy.
